Growing Up is HARD!!
Transitioning from a wild and carefree tiny human into an emotional and sometimes surly teenager is hard work! I know because I once went through that terrible stage in my life and I don't know about you, but I did not enjoy it very much. Going into middle school, our kids are surrounded by the friends they grew up with. You know, those ride or die elementary school friends that would do anything and everything for each other. And then, a month or two into sixth grade, nothing is as it seems. Old friends are lost, new friends are made and their world is upended. As if that isn't enough, they are changing classes all the time, navigating new hallways, teachers, homework, etc., all the while their body is going through a metamorphosis of sorts. It's rough out there for a middle schooler. Heck, it is even rough for someone in high school and as an adult.
For some inexplicable reason, a preteen's self esteem takes a nose dive the second they hit those middle school years. They feel awkward and clunky, unsure of their body and their growing limbs; always feeling as if they are not good enough. Not skinny enough, not tall enough, not pretty enough. Their hair is too short, their hair is too long, their face is all broken out, they now have braces or glasses; their bodies have literally betrayed them and they feel like they are not enough. Even if they are too afraid to admit it, as parents, we know and can see they are struggling to see themselves in the beautiful light that we do.
In a world where no one feels like they are enough, I want our children to see themselves as we see them. Beautiful. Handsome. Happy. Young. Carefree. Smart. Confident. Courageous. Comfortable in their own skin. Full of possibilities. Enough. Always, always, always enough. Therefore, I am relaunching my BeYOUtiful series. A photo session geared for middle to early high school kids...too old for milestone sessions but too young for Senior portrait sessions. A portrait session just for them, in their element, showcasing their talents, hobbies, or interests~the things that make them well, them. With their guitar, books, other instruments, farm animals, pets, or just individually without all of the fluff and stuff.
In this series of photos is Hailey. One of my 2023 portrait ambassadors and a middle school cheerleader who will shortly be navigating the shark infested waters of high school. This young woman is kind, caring, and a wonderful teenager to be around. The more I worked with Hailey during her session, the more she opened up and became confident in her own skin. She was a lot like a butterfly emerging from her cocoon. I loved seeing the look on her face once she realized through her photos that she is BeYOUtiful and perfect, just the way she is. Since the original writing of this post, Hailey has been published in Kid Model Magazine's Most Beautiful Top 50 issue. I am still waiting on her reaction because she is at a cheerleading competition this morning, but I know she is going to be over the moon ecstatic!
That is all I want for any young person....guy, girl, young or old. Heck, even if you are 45 years old and want a session like this, I am all in. I believe we should all know just how BeYOUtiful we are.
